Biography

Boston, MA

Women have been making a major breakthrough lately when it comes to women lyricist in the rap game, and one particular lady that definitely cannot be overlooked is Boston's own 40 B.A.R.R.S.

Born on January 19th by the name Carlisa Lee, 40 B.A.R.R.S is the oldest of three children and just happens to be the only girl. Although she was born in Boston, Mass, she has also spent time in San Diego, Calif. She moved to San Diego at the early age of 6 but she returned to her home town of Boston in 1998. 40 B.A.R.R.S is focused on her music career, but she is also interested in pursuing a career as a civil rights or defense attorney because she is aware and disappointed with the current state of our criminal justice system. Experiencing life on the West Coast as well as the East Coast, she is able to bring to the table a style that combines the best of both worlds. When she first started out, her love for her music was so strong that she originally started recording her music in home studios, basements, and even bathrooms, just so she could get her music heard. Than around 2007 she started to take her rap career seriously and started recording professionally.

40 B.A.R.R.S does not limit herself to being entertained by a specific genre of music, and this is why her style can be more so described as eclectic. Artists that she gains her energy from vary from Lincoln Park and Nickleback, to Nas and Talib Kweli, but she strongly expresses that Eminem’s unorthodox delivery and sinister wordplay keeps him in her top 3 favorite/influential artists. Her love for all music, as well as writing poetry, is what ignited her flame to become a female lyricist.

Versatility is definitely something that makes her style incomparable to the rest of the female rap pioneers (for Example, Eve, Lil Kim, and Foxxy), not that she feels that she is better than them, she just feels her style is different, but she also makes it known that she gives them the highest respect because they are the ones that broke through the barriers and helped pave the way for her to pursue her dream.
