When a Fox 25 reporter asked Boston Mayor Tom Menino if he was feeling Team 220's franchise MC Frankie Wainwright, the politician looked directly at the camera and solemnly said, "That kid is a mother fucking beast!"
The mayor is one of many Wainwright supporters, a group that since the Beantown giant's topic-heavy single "Reasons" shattered airwaves, has come to include everyone from coke runners to college campus weed dealers in running shoes.
A single father who's currently raising two of his three children alone, Frank is more than a genuine hustler - he's the antithesis of MCs who misuse the "h" word. His career is directly linked to his wellbeing; if he doesn't spit, he's got no product, and without sales, he doesn't eat.
And a beast of Frankie's stature is perpetually hungry. Making Man on Fire, he burned midnight oil for months on end, recording while his family slept, playing dad by day, and rocking shows at night and on weekends.
Frank is no stranger to the stage. His current relationship with renowned Boston independent label Team 220 Records was born after label head Big C.E.O. Red witnessed homeboy bust down more than two-dozen rappers three weeks in a row to claim the crown at Mattapan Square's Bourbon St. Battle.
Since his days of rhyming with the Pinnakul crew in his namesake Wainwright Park outside Dorchester's Codman Square section, heads around Beantown have been hip to Frankie's superior rhyme abilities. His appearances on compilations such as Roy Barboza and Funkmaster Flex's Running with a Kingpin, DJ Geespin's Launchpad to the Streets and the Wildboy Twoface and DJ Clinton Sparks-mixed Boston's Elite Pt. 1 further helped cement his reputation.
Now, with a 32-track mixtape debut on the street, cats now know that Frank can successfully translate his ruthless blacktop style onto record. Man on Fire is stacked with hopeful tales from a city in despair. Over riveting Golden Age and contemporary backdrops courtesy of Nelly ProTools, Mass Pike Miles and other top notch Boston beatmakers, Frankie delivers emotional cinderblocks that hardly romanticize his native streets.
The industry is watching. With no marketing campaign or payola tricks, Frankie's landed singles on both public and satellite airwaves. Philly DJ Butterball Ed has "Reasons" in rotation, as do Sirius stalwarts Clinton Sparks, Statik Selektah and the Gomez Brothers. In Boston, the love is unanimous, with Frankie regularly appearing on Emerson's infamous 88.9@night mix show and on JAM'N 94.5 every time DJs Roy Barboza and Geespin hit the airwaves.
Generous airplay and stadium appearances including 94.5's Summer Jam have helped Frankie sell north of 4,500 mixtapes to date. In the past year, he's also been honored for his efforts, receiving the 2007 Mass Industry Committee Lyricist of the Year Award, earning a nomination at the 2007 Boston Music Awards, and opening for Slick Rick and De La Soul at Mayor Thomas Menino's 2007 Peace Boston Hip-Hop Festival. In January, Frankie will appear in The Source magazine's On the Radar section, thus securing his rise into mainstream consciousness.
How does Frankie respond to the recent buzz surrounding Man on Fire? Apparently, with the same nonchalance that he smacks through the mixtape's track list. "I'm not cocky, but it's not like I don't think I'm better than everybody else either," he says. "If that wasn't my mentality, then I wouldn't be a real MC."
